The Columbian is a historic mixed-use redevelopment in Downtown Newark, New Jersey, located just steps from the Prudential Center and Newark Penn Station. Originally constructed in 1890, with an eastern addition completed in 1909, the building has served a variety of commercial purposes throughout its history, including retail, manufacturing, warehousing, and a family-owned restaurant.

Today, The Columbian has been transformed into a vibrant urban destination featuring 72 loft-style residential apartments above the flagship Dinosaur Bar-B-Que restaurant, which occupies the entire ground floor. The adaptive reuse project preserves the building’s historic character while introducing contemporary residential spaces, creating a distinctive blend of architectural heritage and modern urban living.

The redevelopment retains defining architectural features including the dark red brick façade, decorative brick detailing, original floor tiles, and mosaic wainscoting. The loft-style residences feature large industrial-inspired windows, stainless steel appliances, modern finishes, and access to rooftop terraces that provide additional outdoor amenity space.

Through the thoughtful adaptive reuse of a historic Newark property, The Columbian contributes to the continued revitalization of Downtown Newark while preserving an important part of the city’s architectural heritage.
