A New Gathering Place for Newark: Cortaditos Coffee Brings Cuban Culture and Community to Downtown

Welcoming Cortaditos Coffee to Downtown Newark
Downtown Newark continues to welcome businesses that do more than serve customers—they create spaces where people can connect, share experiences, and strengthen the community around them.
One of the newest additions to Newark’s growing small business scene is Cortaditos Coffee, a Cuban-inspired café built around the belief that coffee has the power to bring people together, foster meaningful connections, and create lasting community impact. Through culture, coffee, and people, Cortaditos creates a welcoming environment that builds social capital and inspires positive action beyond the coffee cup. Whether supporting local initiatives or championing social causes, the café strives to be a force for good in every neighborhood it serves.
A Mission Rooted in Heritage
That community-driven mission is deeply rooted in the story of its founders. Cortaditos was established by Adam and Andres, two Cuban American entrepreneurs brought together by a shared passion for their heritage and social impact.
Adam, born in the United States to Cuban parents, founded a nonprofit organization that supports Cuban American college students through scholarships and leadership development programs. Andres, who immigrated from Cuba at the age of 25, founded Sweets & Cortaditos, a family-owned bakery celebrating authentic Cuban flavors and hospitality.
Their partnership began organically when Andres provided coffee, pastries, and appetizers for Adam’s nonprofit scholarship galas. What started as a shared commitment to giving back quickly grew into a larger vision: a dynamic café that celebrates Cuban culture while creating a physical space for community connection.
Activating Downtown Newark
For Newark, businesses like Cortaditos represent much more than a new coffee spot. They contribute to the vibrant, walkable streets that make Downtown a destination for residents, students, professionals, and visitors. Local businesses help activate neighborhoods, support surrounding retailers, and strengthen the sense of place that defines a thriving city.
Beyond its daily coffee service, Cortaditos serves as a versatile gathering destination. The business actively hosts events, offers a rooftop space for private gatherings, and brings its signature Cuban café experience directly to the community through the Cortaditos Coffee Truck—perfect for festivals, corporate events, weddings, and special occasions.
Fueling the City’s Revitalization
The continued growth of locally owned businesses is an essential part of Newark’s revitalization. As new cafés, restaurants, and neighborhood gathering spaces open their doors, they add to the city’s energy, celebrate its cultural diversity, and help create an environment where communities can flourish.
Whether you are enjoying a traditional cortadito, attending a local event, or connecting with friends, Cortaditos Coffee represents another exciting step forward in Downtown Newark’s evolution as a vibrant and culturally rich neighborhood.
